In the world of sandwiches, clever chefs are substituting all sorts of things for bread. Cornbread. Pretzels. Heck, some restaurants are doing God’s work with doughnuts. But one option in Virginia Beach is just plain insane.
Or, rather, just plantain.
The pataçon sandwich from La Yaroa Tropical, a true hidden gem in the Thalia Village area of Virginia Beach, features slow-roasted pork shoulder or marinated strips of steak (or both), topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato, all on two flattened sweet plantains.
The sandwich is an explosion of flavor – spicy, savory and sweet – all in perfect proportion. It made me jump off my stool and go looking for the owner to give them props.
