Midcentury modern masterpiece
Chef Courtney White spends her workdays crafting amazing dishes at Blanca, her French-inspired bistro in Norfolk. But for the latest Distinction Supper Club, she reached back to her training in northern Italy to craft a series of dishes that left lucky attendees begging for more.
About two dozen guests joined us in October at the home of Lin Miller and David Cacace. Their beautifully remodeled midcentury house in Norfolk’s Talbot Park was one of the more stunning locations in recent memory, providing a cozy, homey ambiance to an incredible meal.
As White prepared the dinner, guests toured the recently finished home, marveling at its courtyard and pool while enjoying antipasti, hot olives and fried gnocchi. Refreshments included an Aperol spritz and Lambrusco di Sorbara.
White, who trained at award-winning restaurants in New York and Charleston, South Carolina, is known for carefully choosing combinations of flavors and her Secret Supper did not disappoint.
Guests started with a course of autumn squash ravioli with brown butter, sage and chestnuts. It provided a sweet and savory mixture that played perfectly off the 2018 Luigi Baudana (G.D. Vajra) Dragon blend.
The second course featured grilled duck, potatoes and salad, which paired deliciously with the 2015 Arpepe Rosso di Valtellina. White followed this with a palate-cleansing cheese course that included a Solo di Bruna parmesan and Gorgonzola Cremificato, all of which we washed down with a 2018 Raina Trebbiano Spoletino.
We capped the evening off with a light, sweet dessert of warm autumn fruit with amaretto and whipped cream.
It was a meal, and an evening, so pleasant and enjoyable that no one wanted to say goodnight once the dinner was done.
